Introduction

The introduction provides an overview to key histories, including the long and storied histories of dismissing women’s voices and women’s cultural production as less serious, less intellectually rigorous, less important, less funny, and less realistic than cultural production created by and for men. This history of dismissing women’s production is essential to understanding why the recently released films that are the subject of our book are important but also to putting the backlash they received in context.
