ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by clarifying what is meant by the concept of pedagogy and provides an overview on levels of theory and their relationship to educational technology. It establishes the foundational definitional, theoretical, and philosophical assumptions about the idea of pedagogy. The chapter presents a review of the literature on the way the pedagogy of immersive virtual reality (iVR) is currently conceived, highlighting applicable gaps. The chapter also presents an original middle-range pedagogical theory, the Actioned Pedagogy for Immersive Learning (APIL) framework, which is designed to assist educators in making sound decisions in choosing, using, and reviewing iVR applications for their classrooms. The APIL framework is supported by two new scaffolds designed to provide a sophisticated framing of iVR pedagogy which challenge common sense tropes associated with the field.
