ABSTRACT

With the use of immersive virtual reality (iVR) in schools still in its infancy, there is value in documenting and reflecting on the ‘nuts and bolts’ aspects of embedding the technology in the dynamic setting of the classroom. This chapter provides a context-rich account of some of the successes and unintended consequences of the VR School Study. It is an account of the technological ‘state of the actual’ rather than the ‘state of the art’. The chapter describes the practical and technical issues encountered throughout the study, with a focus on the responses to ethical conundrums as they arose. Ethics-in-practice is especially important when introducing a new technology as some issues could not have been anticipated during the procedural ethics stage. For example, it became apparent that there was a need for someone in the VR rooms to act as a ‘spotter’ to ensure that students did not collide with objects or people.
