ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the current state-of-play of research on immersive virtual reality (iVR) and school education drawing together research literature with the findings from the VR School Study. It outlines what needs to be known to ensure iVR is used in schools for Deeper Learning. At a mundane but important level, there are a number of technical and practical issues to solve if iVR is to be seamlessly embedded into classrooms. Educating pre-service teachers and the teaching profession about the technical and pedagogical potential of different types of iVR is vital. The chapter suggests a set of actions in the areas of initial teacher education, in-service teacher professional learning (sometimes known as professional development), and for design of and research into the use of immersive virtual learning environments in schools.
