ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the research on the evolving area of inclusive volunteering and explores a range of potential benefits of including volunteers from diverse backgrounds in sport organisations. It discusses research on potential barriers to including volunteers from diverse backgrounds as well as future research directions before providing strategies for sport organisations to work with volunteers in the area. The chapter provides insights to assist sport organisations to alter the conditions and values that shape an individual’s choices about volunteering and potentially lead to a more diverse volunteer workforce in community in sport. By expanding and providing individuals from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to participate in sport volunteering may increase the overall number of volunteers available for sport organisations and provide a meaningful leisure pursuit for individuals. Despite the apparent benefits of including volunteers with a disability, only a small proportion of individuals with a disability actually engage in sport volunteering.
