ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the nature and scope of volunteer sport administration, key roles of volunteer administrators, some of the complex trends influencing administrators and provides a summary of the core principles required to effectively develop and manage these volunteers. Sports programmes and events require careful planning, budgeting and organisation that often occur out of the spotlight. Volunteer administrators are sometimes described as “core” volunteers and comprise a large proportion of third-sector sport and non-sport volunteers. While some non-profit organisations utilise both positions it is usually the case that a sport organisation’s president also has the role of chairing board meetings. While the roles listed above are the central administrative positions within most non-profit organisations, many sport organisations, particularly at the community level, also have a number of other operational areas or roles represented on their boards or management committees.
