ABSTRACT

When Gianpaolo Baglioni’s sons, Malatesta Baglioni and Orazio Baglioni, learned H of their father’s execution, they fled from Perugia. Both young men were already tough and experienced soldiers; but they realized that they lacked the strength to defy the armies Pope Leo had assembled to send against Perugia. After Pope Leo’s death in 1521 the two brothers returned in triumph to Perugia, just as their father had done after the deaths of Pope Alexander and Pope Julius. In the autumn of 1522, under the pressure of the new Medici pope, Clement VII, a peace was patched up between Gianpaolo’s sons and Gentile, and Gentile returned to Perugia. Malatesta was away, serving as a condottiere for Venice. A combined papal and imperial army threatened Florence. So Malatesta Baglioni was hired to defend their city against the armies of Pope Clement and Emperor Charles V. The fact that Gianpaolo had betrayed Florence did not prevent the Florentines from hiring his son.
