ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the relevant theories and models that can provide a better understanding of the complex issues of African players’ GBB to society. It does so by applying economic sociology approaches and Weberian theory of social rationality to illustrate the underlying basis of players’ socioeconomic contributions to society. Drawing on the literature from sociology, cultural, economic, and institutionalised networks including economic rationality and rational behaviours supported analysing the GBB of players. The results appear in the development of a comprehensive socioeconomic model of Give Back Behaviour which explains the logical action of African players towards society. Findings contribute to how players’ subjectivity can be based on their values, conceptions, objectives, or interests connecting the distinct economic and social behaviours to societal causes in the communities. This chapter recommends further research to apply other approaches apart from social sciences to explain the GBB of players to society.
