ABSTRACT

The role of the Museum within both the City and the wider museums world forms the subject of this chapter. The functions and purposes that the Museum is meant to fulfil are discussed, and the key actors with the responsibility for establishing these are identified. The complex interrelationships between different groups of actors in this process of determining what the Museum will be asked to provide is established and the role of Museum staff in managing the often competing values and interests that are entailed in this is considered. The competing nature of many of the demands that are made of the Museum and how these are reacted to by Museum staff are also discussed in detail.
