ABSTRACT

Many decades ago music education in school consisted of sitting at a desk and writing western classical notation. Through the years the emphasis on learning notation in schools has shifted. Now an effective and enriching music curriculum focuses more on the development of practical music-making skills. Music teachers typically use a variety of fun activities to support their pupils’ musical development. This is important because children ought to be looking forward to an engaging and interactive music lesson instead of the expectation of sitting at a desk with pen and paper. Music learning needs to be enjoyable and offer pupils an opportunity to learn in a different way to other subjects, thereby contributing to the education of the whole child. Through interacting with music learning in these ways, pupils become more engaged and look forward to their music lessons. Thus, they make better progress and achieve more.
