ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the changing economic and social conditions of the world of work which are resulting in the multigenerational workforce becoming the norm in many industries and locations. It considers some evidence of how this demographic shift is occurring and why, and look at the issues employers need to be aware of around the ongoing changes within their working population. The nature of work and its availability to those who carry it out will depend in large part on the economic conditions under which an organization operates in its marketplace, no matter its sector or purpose. The reasons why people work are complicated but mostly rest on the premise that earnings are the key driver for the majority of people. Changing social conditions as well as economic ones may also influence perspectives about the meaning of work and what staff are looking for from their employment.
