ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some of the broader challenges of managing an age diverse workforce, referencing some of the current research and thinking on this issue. Several key factors in recent times have influenced the way people think about a workforce, both in terms of existing personnel and potential recruits. A generation is a group of individuals born and living contemporaneously, having a common knowledge and experience which impacts the way the group thinks, believes, develops it values and attitudes, and behaves. The Centre for Ageing Better (2019) suggests that health conditions are forcing many people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s out of the labour market completely. Initially on a probationary period, Susan was finally offered a permanent role after the Xmas holidays. Susan is an example of an older employee who was too well-qualified for a job role but took it on the basis that it served a purpose for her.
