ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to build a theoretical framework for ecocritical geopolitics. It therefore attempts to connect the theoretical approach of popular geopolitics and its focus on the power of discourse and representation with that of ecocriticism and its focus on the representation of the environment in its different dimensions in popular culture. It opens with an introduction to the critical approach in geography, and its emphasis on the power of geo-graphic representation. It then presents critical geopolitics and its attention to the power-knowledge mechanism in its discursive articulation in the different forms of geopolitical representation. Within critical geopolitics, it identifies popular geopolitics, which studies the production of geopolitical discourse in popular culture, as the reference point from which to develop a research approach capable of investigating the production of environmental discourse through popular culture. Ecocritical geopolitics shares its theoretical frame with popular geopolitics, but shares with ecocriticism, to which the last paragraph is dedicated, the theme of investigation.
