ABSTRACT

Despite all of the technological advances in recent decades handwriting continues to be considered an important form of communication for children. Parents and carers in western societies still expect their children to be able to produce a neat and legible piece of handwriting within a given time frame. Handwriting skills need to be experienced, learnt and practised stage by stage. As the child develops their handwriting skills, they will move to what is called a static modified tripod grip. Using multiple angles and strokes is also essential for the development of a fluent and legible cursive handwriting script. Within the last decade, research studies have found that it is essential for all children to have regular practice in handwriting in order to improve letter formation quality, speed and legibility. One thing that can be extremely helpful for all children is a consistent approach to handwriting throughout their Early Years’ education (and indeed later).
