ABSTRACT

Transformative organizing is a practice of changing and healing the historical, intergenerational, and intersectional traumas and injuries caused by oppressive social systems through social action, participatory processes, and healing justice. The chapter introduces healing justice and offers support around several potential emotional perils that organizers may at one time or another encounter—anger, fear, despair, burnout, and co-optation. It also discusses some of the essential qualities that are important to pay attention to—persistence, clarity, solidarity, joy, and creativity—to cultivate resilience and withstand the vicissitudes of organizing. The chapter concludes with skill development around inquiry and self-awareness practices that are critical for praxis, healing, and burnout prevention.
