ABSTRACT

Inquiry into the idea of praxis brings attention to the synergies between social action and theory identifying praxis as a habit of reflection, action, and theory building that emerges out of cycles of engagement in community and collective deliberation. This chapter offers an analysis of five major schools of thought relevant to progressive and transformative organizing—Marxist traditions, feminist theories, civil society perspectives, anarchism, and postmodern perspectives. Special attention is paid to critical theory, queer theory, and the roles that such theories have played in social movements and other social change work.
