ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces power analysis and strategy in organizing; at the same time, it problematizes the militaristic terms—strategy, tactics and campaign—and offers transformative and emergent approaches. The introduction of a strategy chart and spectrum of allies chart clarifies how to systematically create a strategy for change while also assessing allies and opposition. The chapter introduces the power cube as a form of power analysis, identifying types of power as power over, power to, power with, and power within, while also discussing the three dimensions of power—levels, forms, and spaces of power. Key to strategic analysis are issue assessment and identification. The chapter also focuses on formal community assessment methods, such as participatory rural appraisal (PRA), participatory action research (PAR), and asset-based community development (ABCD). The chapter concludes with a case study about organizing with older adults.
