ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the idea of being Hindu and its nuances for the common people of India. In Hinduism, with a number of gods and goddesses, the relationship between dance and religion is intrinsic. Nataraja performed the vigorous cosmic dance that resulted in the creation of the earth. His dance form expressed an ecstasy in the creation, preservation and destruction. The position of the nautch girl is no longer what it was in the Indian social system. Not merely Europeans but some of the best among the natives feel that in view of the gradual rising of the tone of society, the evils associated with her profession should cease to enjoy the toleration accorded to them in the past. Although the nautch girls played a significant role in the socio-cultural life of India, however, during British rule, Hindu dance forms, especially temple dancing, were looked down upon and the women performers–devadasis–were linked to prostitution.
