ABSTRACT

The Australian tours were made possible by the generous official assistance of state funding bodies, such as the Arts Council of Australia, the Adult Education Board and the Council of Adult Education. The Indian dancers performed at prestigious theatres, such as the National Theatre in Melbourne, the Majestic Theatre in Adelaide and the Repertory Theatre in Perth. Temple Dreaming was first performed in Australia at the Alexander Theatre at Monash University and later toured India. As an early image-maker in both pre- and post-independent India, Ananda Shivaram, with the help of Louise Lightfoot, de-provincialised and popularised Hindu dances in the international dance circuit. They organised this unique space in the utopian dream for multicultural dance and the arts that paved the way for other Indian dancers and troupes. Over the years, they have come to participate in various dance and cultural festivals organised throughout Australia.
