ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the most interesting of all that are raised by the comparative study of the order Primates. It provides an attempt is made to state very briefly the present position of certain important studies on the Primates relating to the questions. The performances of monkeys in “delayed reaction” tests vary considerably according to the lay-out of the experiments, and a great deal has to be done before any final conclusions are drawn regarding the relative memory capacities of different Primates. In spite of the excellent confirmation of St. George Mivart views provided by the psychological investigations of sub-human Primates, the belief that an ape is more intelligent than a monkey cannot necessarily yet be regarded as incorrect. It is possible that the usual methods of experimental psychologists are incapable of demonstrating the significance in overt behaviour of differences which are generally believed to exist in the complexity of the sensori-motor equipment of different sub-human Primates.
