ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book argues that higher education can prepare students of all disciplines to participate in, and contribute to the betterment of, communities and societies, locally and globally. It describes priorities for learners and learning within a global higher education; a critical pedagogy approach for higher education in a multicultural world; and understandings about relationship development among globally diverse students. The book explores aspects of human learning processes, influencers, and outcomes for globally diverse students; and how these relate to our understanding of the development of relationships. It discusses these underpinnings with reference to specific areas of the student experience. The book investigates how conditions within/approaches to learning environments, the academic curriculum, group learning activities, student assessment and the optional curriculum might impede or facilitate relationship development and empowerment among globally diverse students.
