ABSTRACT

This chapter explores objectives and challenges which surround those optional curricular activities which are devoted to some aspect of multi- or inter-cultural learning. The distinctions between activities which are part of the mainstream curriculum and those which sit within the optional curriculum are somewhat blurred. Foreign languages and international business degrees, for example, often embed a required period of study or internship overseas into their structure. Human relationships develop in a variety of contexts and for a variety of reasons. Participation in optional curriculum activities is a particular challenge for those which require international travel. On-campus diversity-related activities, such as elective modules in intercultural communication, multicultural education courses, or diversity-awareness training, along with local community volunteering projects do not generally appear to share the same limitations with regard to access and participation. Any form of activity risks excluding students with disabilities, and many may be unattractive or problematic for students of particular faiths.
