ABSTRACT
Chapter one discusses a wide range of general issues relating to writing history and the history of social work in particular. It addresses themes in the historiography of social work and discusses the historical narrative mode of writing. Advantages and disadvantages involved in the use of archive material are highlighted. Issues related to presentism, nostalgia, and the challenge from post-modernist thinking to historians are discussed.
