ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses aesthetic and didactic dimensions in Dadakuada that must be understood from the traditional Yoruba paradigm. It discusses the elements of Dadakuada aesthetics and didactic dimensions by focusing on different areas of Dadakuada's songs and performances. The language of Dadakuada is completely in the Ilorin dialect of Yoruba, Yoruba Ilorin. Hausa has a number of influences on Dadakuada. This includes the use of Hausa language and proverbs in Dadakuada poetry. The Ilorin people of different ethnic backgrounds have interacted over the ages and the Ilorin Yoruba reflects the multiethnicity of its abode. The Obasanjo song was clearly a commendation of his decision to hand over power to an elected democratic government in Nigeria in 1979. Like all oral poetry, Dadakuada’s beauty lies, among other areas, in its different techniques of performance and its use of language.
