ABSTRACT

This chapter details Ramel’s birth in Aubagne, a small town close to Marseille. His father and paternal grandfather were also physicians. His childhood education had been local until he moved to Marseille for tutelage by the Oratorians, from whence he moved to the University of Aix-en-Provence to study medicine. Although a small faculty, the medical curriculum was ostensibly standardised in French universities by royal edict. His studies were not all theoretical, as Aix students were made to attend the local hospital, and, as he later recalled, performed a significant number of autopsies. He graduated at the age of around 22 years of age ready to apply his learning in a medical practice.
