ABSTRACT

Around 1781, Ramel departed North Africa and commenced practise in Aubagne alongside his father. Having reached the age of maturity, he married and, as Aubagne was heavily serviced by physicians and surgeons, also practised in the nearby town of La Ciotat; this included working at the local hospitals in both towns. The hospital at La Ciotat in particular was noted for caring for soldiers. At this time he also visited Minorca which the French and Spanish armies had recently taken from the British, although his role is not defined, where there had been an outbreak of a quotidian fever. It was in the early 1780s that Ramel started publishing.
