ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses several limitations of the conceptual framework propose and of priming technique in general. It suggests how to address them in future research. Priming research has challenges, especially when it comes to using consistent and comparable methods. Goals can be primed either supraliminally or subliminally. Supraliminal priming occurs when the prime is visible, but a person is unaware of its influence on behavior. The number and ratio of prime cues to neutral cues has been inconsistently applied across priming goal studies. This irregularity muddles our knowledge of sufficient and necessary prime ratio strength. Goals lose motivational power when the goal is attained. New goals are needed for new pursuits. Accordingly, after a primed goal is achieved, its effects on behavior dissipate. In the science of organizational behavior, practical application helps keep Type III error tendencies in check.
