ABSTRACT

In the introductory chapter I explore the theme of science fantasy and its use of mythology to express contemporary concerns in the form of political allegory and suggest that the comics medium may be one best suited to explore the juxtaposition of temporal registers that such expressions entail. Comics, as a mixed medium that combines words and images, emboxed in panels, tends to spatialize time so that discrete events that may have occurred in very different time horizons come to co-exist on the plane of the page. Living myths that are re-enacted in ritual contexts or narrated in popular performances are especially suited to the comics medium, especially popular commercial comics with their artisanal production forms and serial nature that work in ways that resemble narratives in the oral tradition.
