ABSTRACT

The Medici rulers lie buried in the family church of San Lorenzo and their supporters are, for the most part, interred in Santa Croce or elsewhere in the city. But tombs and tombstones, however brilliantly executed, are singularly ineffective in recalling past glories. The Medici rulers lie buried in the family church of San Lorenzo and their supporters are, for the most part, interred in Santa Croce or elsewhere in the city. The Villa Medici at Fiesole was originally built for Cosimo’s second son, Tornabuoni Giovanni, and was completed about 1461, three years before Cosimo’s death. Poliziano wrote in praise of life at the villa, and the interior walls are covered with some interesting frescoes. The first ones seem to have been done by Filippino Lippi, while others of less distinguished origin recall scenes of family history. All the Medici villas, except perhaps Caffagiuolo, have their own elegance.
