ABSTRACT

The Neapolitan breed was also famous and Lorenzo had many dealings with King Ferrante of Naples from whom he once bought twenty mares at a time. In many respects the Pazzi family were the inevitable opponents of the Medici. The Medici had also taken great pains to oppose the elevation of Francesco Salviati to be Archbishop of Pisa. In short, the Medici had in a fairly short space of time incurred the frustrated hatred of the Archbishop, the continued fury of the Pope and the jealousy of the Pazzi. The Pope was not amused at the failure of the Pazzi, but it was difficult to see how the Medici could be unseated in their own city. The manipulation of power, so dear to Cosimo’s heart, was continued in a more open form under Lorenzo. The rewards of office went to Medici supporters and it was made clear that everything flowed from Lorenzo’s favour.
