ABSTRACT
The causal pattern is valid: chance, the sceptic’s friend in need, is vahd also if its explanatory powers are not exaggerated: but it is interlocked with a deeper pattern, which anthropologists can only begin to comprehend in intuitive fashion. It has revealed something of a deeper pattern than that of causality—the pattern behind the pattern. Hints of a deeper pattern come through to us also in ways which inevitably seem queer. Probably the core of what is called the “occult” consists of symbolical representations of glimpses of the deeper pattern. The correlation between heavenly bodies and human happenings would be merely one example of a pattern running through all things, which is part of the cosmic structure and which was discovered because it was the easiest example of such correlated series to discover by empirical means.
