ABSTRACT

To turn to the subject of psychical research, in order to follow the clue dimly seen in our bird’s-eye view of science, will probably shock the reader, who will regard it as a descent to a banal level. But I am bound to narrate the following experience because it is relevant to all that follows: and, since it is a personal experience, it will be convenient to write about it in the first person. I may perhaps say at once that it will not lead to the kind of discussion that the word “psychical” probably suggests. I myself, though interested for a long time in psychical research of a scientific order, did not dream of the disclosure that this subject was destined to make to me.
