ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on relationships in your personal life, with particular emphasis on building and maintaining important personal relationships while you’re working toward and achieving success in your career in psychology. This may seem counterintuitive, given frequent discussions about and the often-real challenges of the sometimes-competing priorities of work, school, and other aspects of people’s lives. However, the professional and personal aspects of our lives, including relationships, have the potential to be mutually rewarding and reinforcing. This chapter explores and shares both practical guidance and unwritten “rules” for developing and maintaining healthy personal relationships, with particular focus on family and friends, while you’re pursuing and succeeding in your career in psychology.
