ABSTRACT

The original founders of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) felt that it should be located at the same place as the United Nations. The returns to Italy on its offer to FAO have been immense. FAO moved physically from Washington to Rome in 1951 on the ships SS Vulcania and Saturnia. Rome is also very conveniently situated in the world. FAO benefits from this professionally. When FAO came to Rome there was immediate pressure on it to employ Italians. FAO’s main buildings include a number of rooms decorated in the style of particular countries and bearing their name. A great bugbear for FAO staff, and a cause of a great deal of lost time for the organization, was the bank. For many FAO people the salary they received from the organization was much higher than that on which they had lived before, and they tended to maintain their previous tastes and economical habits.
