ABSTRACT

Most countries, including the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, look to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for statistics and technical information on a world basis. A request to provide a general marketing adviser was often the first step in seeking FAO assistance. FAO was able to provide an Italian marketing specialist who could communicate easily with the local authorities. During the late 1970s twenty model producer markets were set up in Brazil with FAO guidance. FAO had an American specialist, Roger Burdette, who helped several countries develop systems whereby additional meat was brought under refrigeration from abattoirs located in production areas. The assembly and dissemination of practical information and experience was an important part of FAO’s marketing assistance. The help provided by FAO government support teams varied with the needs of the country. FAO has found itself with projects that turned out to be aside from the strategic issues, or which attracted meagre government support.
