ABSTRACT

The climate and the soil set the scene for food production. The consumer may be thought to have the final say through his demand for food and his choice of what he wants to eat and drink. If food is scarce, there may be no choice at all, but merely a demand for food to sustain life. The history of man is a constant struggle to meet this demand. The best hope for solving the world food problems is to make the maximum use of the suitable food-growing areas. If a food-production problem is looked at from only one point of view, it is deceptively easy to propose a solution. Attention will then be drawn to human problems on the farm itself and a discussion of the many important political, social and economic problems which affect food production, and the possibilities of improvement. The change from subsistence agriculture to agriculture for profit took place in most countries many centuries ago.
