ABSTRACT

The meta-analysis was coined by G. V. Glass and refers to a quantitative approach to reviewing large numbers of related research studies. Specification of a research question is of primary importance in any investigation. Research reviews, in general, are frequently vague with regard to the principal question of the study. The researcher systematically reviews reliable databases in order to discover studies that are relevant to the study question. Criteria for judging inclusion of a study in the review of literature must be established prior to the database searches. Policy analysts who use meta-analysis are in a position to discover trends. The research technique of meta-analysis has gained favor as a method for studying health issues. This procedure has been embraced by many investigators in the health field because of its ability to aid in the review of results of large numbers of studies.
