ABSTRACT

Improvements in South African agriculture are likely to take time; the gap between the methods of the ordinary farmer and the better ones demonstrated at the experiment stations is very considerable Between the main block of land and the sea in the southern region are some small mountain ranges, the valleys of which have great agricultural importance. Africa is, of all the continents, the poorest in agricultural resources apart from the lower Nile region and parts of Mauretania. The High Veld is the most suitable region for European settlement and systems of farming. The modern development of Africa has been rapid. Africa has an enormous number of tribes and their response to the impact of European civilization has varied greatly, some being able to assimilate its spirit, others, as yet, only its form or not even that. Sugar cane has the distinction of being the only crop for which South Africa’s yields compare favourably with the world average.
