ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author proposes Critical Race English Education as a theoretical and pedagogical construct that tackles race, anti-Blackness, and white supremacy within English education, ELA classrooms, and beyond. Black youth are not presented with the opportunities to explore their multiple identities or given the opportunities to participate in racial justice movements of our current time such as #BlackLivesMatter and #SayHerName movements. The author theorizes Critical Race English Education and how Critical Race English Education is an extension of critical race theory, BlackCrit, and critical race pedagogy. The discussion in this chapter explains the significance and the theoretical lineage of Critical Race English Education and the need for critical race theories and pedagogies in ELA classrooms.
