ABSTRACT

This chapter encompasses the history of Grupo Prisa since its birth in 1972 to the beginning of 2020, as it highlights the different stages through which the company has expanded, thrived, and declined. From its early years and a single newspaper, El País, Prisa developed following a cross-media growth strategy, under the firm hand of businessman Jesús Polanco, who transformed it into a multimedia group with key outlets in the press, radio, television, publishing, and education industries. The conglomerate expanded from Spain into the international arena, especially in Latin America. However, the critical situation of the firm due to the 2008 financial crisis and its impact in Spain and its media marketplace pushed Prisa to a scenario in which divestments were the only way out. The text closes with the description of Prisa’s new strategies and movements to refocus itself. Grupo Prisa is beginning to position itself solely as an education and information firm, thereby strengthening its current core business.
