ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and analyzes the political economy profile of Grupo Prisa. The topics addressed here include the shareholding structure of the company since its founding, documenting the takeover of Jesús Polanco as well as the financialization process during the 2000s. These changes are reflected in the composition of the board of directors in 2019. The chapter also includes an overview of Prisa’s board interlockings and the company’s labour force evolution, with a related regression during the period 2010–2019. Readers will also find here the relationship developed by Prisa with the Spanish state (the Crown, top economic and financial powers, and the democratic governments) as well as with governments of some Latin American countries. The chapter also discusses Prisa’s corporate social responsibility strategy. This reflects a picture of the clashes, alignments, and efforts made by the media mogul in its struggle to negotiate its role as a member of the power elite and simultaneously maintain social legitimacy as a media producer.
