ABSTRACT

Since the last quarter of the twentieth century, Grupo Prisa has been a conglomerate which, through its companies and brands, participates very actively in the Spanish fields of information, culture, and education. Deftly, and mainly through the publication of newspapers and magazines, electronic media, and educational textbooks and works of fiction, Prisa has exercised, and continues to exercise, its symbolic power in democratic Spain and in its natural areas of influence – Latin America and Europe. This chapter describes and analyzes the cultural power that Prisa has been able to build over more than four decades thanks to its main media outlets: the quality newspaper El País and the radio network Cadena SER. The chapter also deals with the performance of its educational publisher, Editorial Santillana, the jewel in Prisa’s crown, which is now present in 21 countries.
