ABSTRACT
The Illusionist inspires a group of people to enter unfamiliar psychological territory where they subscribe to the conceit that space represents time. The Illusionist materialises departed or dead persons, suggesting they are sitting on a particular chair; he or she then helps group members to have conversations with them, even though they are not there. Memory Lane is a time-based inquiry using physical movement on a line, and a role-based interview at each stopping point. It is more complex, deeper and has more impact than a simple ‘time line’, which could be drawn on a whiteboard or a sheet of paper. A Memory Lane does not have to be limited to past and present, but can extend into the future. You can represent the alternatives by gesturing an imaginary fork in the road, or by building one with masking tape to represent it more concretely.
