ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the foundational and operational principles central to Family Life Education (FLE), which can serve as a metaframework for many home visiting models. Certified Family Life Educators are credentialed family life educators and hold a four-year degree or a graduate degree. Home visitors with a background in FLE would be expected to understand the foundational principles of education, prevention, and strengths-based approaches, and have a strong understanding of theory and research. A foundation in FLE also necessarily includes operational components of culture, contexts, content and practice. The centerpiece of the foundational principle of education is that techniques and approaches set the stage to empower families to build skills and maintain or promote their functioning. FLEs have posited that the relationship between the professional and the family and the process of learning may be more important than the educational content.
