ABSTRACT
Since the first edition of this book, the world has experienced endless and accelerating advances in disruptive technology that have transformed policy flows and greatly increased the velocity of information. The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the effects, opportunities, and challenges of emerging technologies on global governance and global think tanks. As global governance is challenged by a tumultuous world of constant flux, faced by drastic and fast-paced worldwide technological advancements, global think tanks have an impetus to keep up to date with these advancements to both: (1) provide timely advice to policymakers on increasingly urgent and global technological matters; and (2) utilize the speed, accuracy, and nontraditional data sources that emerging technologies unlock so as not to be overtaken by global technology companies that are moving into the traditional spaces of global think tanks. Simply put, emerging technologies have the potential to revolutionize the world of research or to wipe out global think tanks, and they have the potential to support democratic institutions and global governance or to be globally catastrophic.
