ABSTRACT

This chapter provides ideas on what a newly qualified teacher could do when they meet their new class for the very first time (usually before the summer holidays) for an introductory lesson. Two key ideas are addressed in some detail: understanding the class rules and building a sense of community. Ideas of how to make a display with the ideas developed in this first lesson are provided.

All the relevant and key information that can be collected before the summer holidays is explored with the idea of helping a smooth transition from one year group to another for the children and probably from one classroom to another. This key information should also help the newly qualified teacher to set up their classroom.
