ABSTRACT

This chapter helps the newly qualified teacher plan for the first term, initially raising awareness of key school policies and priorities that will impact on teaching and learning. The chapter also explores the importance of having overviews of each half term’s planning and how meaningful links can be made between areas of the curriculum in order to reinforce children’s learning.

An example is included of how a key event in the term, such as a class assembly, can be considered at the planning stage. The chapter also encourages the newly qualified teacher to become familiar with the different resources throughout the school before the term starts and to think about the implications and considerations of teaching in spaces other than their classroom.

Planning for the first week of teaching with a new class is addressed with some key suggestions that should help with feeling prepared.
