ABSTRACT

Initially this chapter highlights the author’s belief in the ‘language of learning’ being at the heart of every classroom and the word ‘work’ banned. The chapter explores how to create an environment where children develop an understanding of their role in the process of learning and what knowledge and skills are required to be a learner.

The chapter also explores key elements of teaching that should help to ensure that high quality teaching takes place so that the children have the best chance of making progress.

The quality of modelling, teacher questioning, and the language of feedback for learning are examples of some of the areas covered.

Finally, the chapter finishes with key elements of the language of behaviour for learning, for example: the language of choice, rules, praise, and direction.
