ABSTRACT

The role of a teacher in a school is multi-layered in terms of the different relationships they encounter, such as: parents/carers, teaching assistants and learning support, headteacher, mentor, office staff, lunchtime supervisors, cleaners, and the site manager. This chapter encourages a newly qualified teacher to think about the different elements of each type of relationship and provides suggestions on how to develop these professional relationships. The chapter offers practical examples of the use of language in different encounters such as careful but honest language with parent/carers or making a new suggestion to a teaching assistant.

There is also advice on being a mentee.
