ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 is about the different professional relationships that a trainee teacher needs to develop on the final school placement: mentor, class teacher, additional staff in the classroom, parents and carers. The chapter provides practical examples of how trainee teachers can be proactive in developing a positive working relationship with their mentor as well as guidelines about how to make a positive first impression with the class teacher. The deployment of other staff in the classroom, teaching assistants (TAs), and learning support assistants (LSAs) is also addressed, recognising the importance of the nuances of professional interactions that should make a difference in positively engaging additional adults in the classroom.

The chapter also provides ideas of how to start engaging with parents and carers as well as the importance of becoming part of the community of the school.
